Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Kralendijk: ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in January and November; quietest in May.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Bonaire uses the US dollar, its legal currency since 1 January 2011, when it replaced the Antillean guilder. Banks open as early as 8am and close by 4pm.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Tipping is at your own discretion.

Getting around Bonaire

There is no public bus system, so taxis are the only public transport: at Flamingo Airport (BON) the taxi stand is on your left as you leave the terminal, and a taxi can be called on +599 717 8100. To explore, hire a car, well ahead around holidays: nearly all rental cars are manual, so reserve early if you need an automatic, and a pick-up or a high-clearance jeep is required for Washington-Slagbaai National Park. Driving is on the right.

  • Apps — Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp. Taxis have number plates marked TX and no meters: fares are flat rates by destination, set by the government, but agree the fare before you set off.

Driving is on the right, and the island does not have any stoplights. Maximum speed in urban areas is 40 km/h (25 mph), and outside of town it is 60 km/h (35 mph). More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 911 · ambulance 911 or 913 · fire 911 or 912. The coastguard is on 913.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
