How we rank
Every list on TravelCharika is ordered by what was measured, and nobody pays to be listed or to be placed higher. This page says what decides the order.
Months and places
Each month at each place gets a score from four measured parts:
- Climate, 40%, from ten years of measured weather: how close the average daily high is to 18–30 °C (35% of the climate part), how few rainy days there are, full marks at 4 or fewer (35%), humidity (15%) and sunshine (15%).
- Fares, 30%: how the typical fare our scanner has seen from the city you fly from compares with that place's other months, cheapest month best. Where few fares are known, this part counts for less.
- Crowds, 20%: the public holidays at both ends of the trip, and how many people read about the place that month (Wikipedia page views).
- Daylight, 10%: the hours of daylight.
A month is ruled out, not just scored low, when it has more than 15 rainy days and more than 180 mm of rain, more than 10 days over 35 °C, a storm season a source confirms, or daily highs more than 12 °C below the comfortable band at a place that is not a winter destination. A place is also left out of the lists that put places forward when the UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to the whole country, and, for readers from the United States or Canada, when their own government's advice is at its last step.
Lists of places for a month, "good right now" and the best months at a place are in order of that score, best first. A few lines on some pages were written by a model rather than measured; they are labelled, and they never set a score or rule a month out.
Booking sites
- Which sites: the ones people in your own country already book with, worked out from where you fly from (or your time zone). A site is listed only where it sells that kind of trip.
- In what order: as well known as they are in your country, best known first, as researched and checked by hand.
- Airlines: the ones whose published routes fly yours, your own country's airlines first, nonstop before one stop.
- Hotel groups and car renters: the ones with a hotel at the place or a counter in its country.
- Who pays: some sites pay us a commission when you book; they are marked Ad. A site that pays sits exactly where it would if it paid nothing, and a site that pays nothing is listed beside one that does. No site can pay to be listed or to move up.
Fares
Fares are the ones our scanner has seen, with the date it saw them. They are not quotes, and no site's price is hidden or raised: the price is whatever the site shows when you book.
Paid placement
There is none. If a paid place ever appears, it will be marked Ad, kept apart from the lists above, and never change their order.
