Privacy

This site has no accounts, no comment box, no cookies and no tracking. You can ask for the weekly email or notifications; what that keeps, and where, is below, and nothing is kept until you ask. There is very little to say here, and what follows is all of it.

What is stored on your device

All of this is kept in your browser and nowhere else, apart from what turning on notifications sends, which is said where it applies. None of it is a cookie. Clearing the site's data in your browser removes all of it, and the site works normally afterwards.

• Your theme choice. If you press the Auto / Light / Dark button, that one word is saved in your browser's local storage so the page does not change under you on the next visit. Nothing else is saved with it.
• Your city, if you choose one. The front page suggests where to go this month from your city. If you pick one, its three-letter airport code is saved in your browser's local storage so you are not asked again. If you have not picked one, the page reads your device's time zone to guess the country you are in. That happens on your device, and the time zone is not sent to us unless you turn on notifications. Either way the page then asks this site for the file of that city's places, as it asks for any page, so the request names a city and nothing about you. Pressing "Change" lets you choose another; the saved city is kept until you do. If you press "Use my location", your browser asks your permission, then says roughly where your device is, once; the page works out the nearest city we cover on your device, and keeps that city as if you had chosen it. Where you are is not sent to us or to anyone, and is not kept. A place's page uses the same city, or the time zone, to show a reader from the United States or Canada their own government's travel advice in place of the UK's; that is worked out on your device too, from a table the page already carries, and asks this site for nothing.
• The places you looked at last. The last eight places whose page you opened are kept in a list in your browser, for the front page's "Recently viewed". The list does not leave your device.
• Whether notifications are on. If you turn them on, a note of it, with the city and time zone they were set up with, is kept in local storage, so the page can tell us if either changes.
• Your answer to the app's bar. On an Android phone a bar, and a card on a place's page, offer the app on Google Play. Press "Not now" and that answer is kept so you are not asked again; tap "Get it on Google Play" and the page you were on is kept for a few minutes, so the bar does not ask again as you come back. A tab the app itself opened remembers that until it is closed, and never shows the bar.
• Pages you have already read. If you install the site, or your browser supports offline reading, a copy of the pages you open, the data they show and their photographs is kept, the most recent ones only, so they still open without a connection. A photograph shown from Unsplash (below) is not among them: your browser keeps it only as it keeps any image.

There are no cookies. Not "no third-party cookies" — none at all.

What is collected when you visit

The site is static files served by Cloudflare (a Cloudflare Worker). Like any web server, Cloudflare records each request: your IP address, the page or file you asked for, your browser's user-agent string and the time. It uses this to deliver the site and to block attacks. From those records we read only weekly totals: how many requests our apps made (each app names itself and its version) and how often they opened. Never an IP address, and nothing that tells one person from another. Cloudflare also runs what takes a sign-up for the weekly email or notifications, and keeps what that stores, set out below. Their privacy policy covers it. We have no way to connect a request to a person.

Some photographs come from Unsplash's API, whose terms ask that they be shown from Unsplash's own servers. Where a photograph is credited "Photo by … on Unsplash", your browser, or the app, loads it from images.unsplash.com, so Unsplash receives that request as any web server would: your IP address, your browser's user-agent string and the address of this site. Unsplash's privacy policy applies to that request. We send Unsplash nothing else about you, and get nothing back about you.

The one measurement we do take is Cloudflare Web Analytics: a small script on each page tells Cloudflare which page was viewed, which site linked to it, roughly where from at country level, and how quickly it loaded. It sets no cookie, stores nothing on your device, and does not fingerprint your browser, so it cannot tell that two visits came from the same person. We use it to see which pages are read and whether the site is fast. Cloudflare's description of it says the same in more detail.

The weekly email

If you ask for the weekly note, your address is sent to Resend, the company that delivers our email, which keeps the list for us. It first sends you one message with a link; you are on the list only once you open the link and press Confirm, and if you never do, your address is never added. Every message carries an unsubscribe link, which takes you off the list at once, and you can also write to us (below) to have your address deleted. We use the address for the weekly note and nothing else, and we do not share it. Resend's privacy policy covers what they do as our processor.

So that nobody can fill an inbox with those first messages, the function that sends them keeps count for a day, in a database at Cloudflare: not your address or your IP address, but a one-way code made from each, which cannot be turned back into either, and the time. Each is deleted after a day.

If you reached the site through a link tagged with a campaign name — one of our ads, say, whose address ends in something like ?utm_campaign=november — that name is kept in your browser's session storage while the tab is open, and is sent with your address if you sign up, so we can tell which campaigns bring readers. It is the campaign's name and nothing about you; it is stored with your address at Resend, and it is gone from your browser when you close the tab.

So that the note can put places in your own country first, the country and city your sign-up comes from are kept with your address at Resend: as your connection gives them to Cloudflare, which serves this site (usually right about the country, often not about the city), or as the apps send them from the city you chose or your phone's time zone; and the city you fly from, if you chose one here. The page where you press Confirm shows the country, to change before you do, and every note has a link to change it. We use them to choose the note's places and nothing else, and they are deleted with your address.

Notifications

If you turn on notifications, your browser or our app asks its push service — Google's for Chrome and the Android app, Apple's for Safari and the iPhone app (which reaches it through Google's Firebase Cloud Messaging, as the Android app does), Mozilla's for Firefox — for an address that reaches this device, and gives it to us, from a browser with the keys to encrypt messages for it. We keep it in a database at Cloudflare, which hosts this site, together with your device's time zone, so a note arrives on Thursday evening where you are; the departure city you chose on the front page, if you chose one; the language of the page; the site's address it was set up on; when it was set up and last changed; and when we last sent a note and which ones, so that none is sent twice. Nothing in it is your name, your email or anything we could use to tell who you are.

We send at most one a week, and only about where and when to go: a holiday coming up, where to go next month, a big event a short trip from your city (the city you chose, or the one your time zone suggests). Turning notifications off in the envelope's pop-up deletes the row at once; blocking them in your browser or phone settings stops them, and the row is deleted the next time the push service tells us the address no longer works.

For AI assistants

An assistant such as Claude or ChatGPT can read the site through https://travelcharika.com/mcp, a Model Context Protocol server that answers from the same data as these pages: the months, the things to do, the activities and big events, the ways there and around, the visa lines, the booking sites. It asks for no sign-in and keeps nothing of what it is asked. So that no one caller can use up what the site may serve in a day, it counts the requests from each connection, in a database at Cloudflare: not the IP address, but a one-way code made from it, which cannot be turned back into it, and the hour. Each count is deleted once it is a day old.For AI assistants says how to add it and what it answers.

Links to other companies

Pages carry links to flight, hotel, tour, car hire, insurance and eSIM sites. They are chosen because people in your country already book with them, not because they pay: most pay us nothing, and some pay a commission if you book. That is said on every page that has them.

Following one of those links takes you to a company we do not control, which will have its own cookies, its own tracking and its own policy. The link usually carries an identifier so the company knows the visit came from here — that is how the commission is attributed. It does not tell them anything about you that your own visit does not.A link that pays also carries a fixed label naming where it was followed — this website, the Android or iPhone app, or the AI connector — and the place's page, so the company can report which of ours a booking came from. It is the same for everyone who follows that link, says nothing about you, and nothing is stored on your device.

The sites a page can open, depending on where you are and where you are going, are the booking sites people in your country use, the airlines that fly the route, and the hotel groups and car renters Photographs link to Wikimedia Commons, and to Unsplash and its photographers, which is not a commercial arrangement — it is the attribution their licences and terms require.

A place's page also opens maps and a route planner, none of which pays us: the place in Google Maps, Apple Maps or, in South Korea, Kakao Map; hospitals and pharmacies near it as Google Maps searches; Rome2rio's search from your city to the place; and your own government's list of its embassies. They carry the place and, for Rome2rio, the city you chose, and nothing else about you.

The apps

The Android app and the iPhone app show what this website shows, on their own screens, from the same files. They collect nothing the website does not and have no account. Either can sign you up for the weekly email: your address goes to the same place, on the same terms, as from the website's form, with the city you chose (or your time zone's) and its country, as the weekly email's part above says, and the app does not keep it. Each asks to show notifications, and only when you press "Turn on notifications" ("Turn on" on the iPhone, after which the iPhone asks too); saying no, or never pressing it, leaves the rest of the app as it is.If you tap "Use my location" when choosing your city, the app asks the phone roughly where it is, once, and works out the nearest city we cover on the phone itself. Where you are is not sent to us or to anyone, and is not kept; what the app remembers is the city, as if you had tapped its name.

Children

This is a travel planning site with nothing directed at children, and it asks nobody's age. We do not knowingly hold data about a child; if a child has signed up for the weekly email or notifications, write to us and it will be deleted.

Your rights, and how to use them

Under the GDPR, the UK GDPR and India's Digital Personal Data Protection Act you may ask what is held about you, ask for it to be corrected or deleted, and complain to a regulator. If you signed up for the weekly email, what we hold is your address, the country and city it came with, and, if it came with one, a campaign's name, all at Resend; write to us and they are deleted.A notification subscription carries no name and no email, so we could not find yours from either: turning notifications off in the envelope's pop-up deletes it.
