Tours and tickets in Thessaloniki

Each site opens on its own search: choose your dates there. A few open on their home page, where you type the place too. Links marked Ad pay us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you; most pay nothing, and what a site pays never decides whether it is listed or where. How we rank

Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the White Tower, 12 km from the airport (SKG): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from July to September; quietest from November to March.

Then and now

Thessaloniki's August days now average 32.7°C, 3.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 10 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

How far Thessaloniki is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Euro. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Greece: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Cards are widely taken in shops, hotels and for transport, but not in some restaurants; carry some euros.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — For sending money to India, not for paying in shops; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not required; leave a euro or two, or round up, in restaurants. Taxi drivers do not expect a tip, though rounding up to the euro is common.

Getting around Thessaloniki

Buy a bus ticket from a ticket booth or street machine, or from the machine on board, which takes only bank cards, and validate it on the reader as you board: it costs €0.60 in the urban zone and lasts 70 minutes, and a 24-hour ticket is €2.50. The metro needs its own ticket, as bus tickets and cards are not valid on it; a ride also costs €0.60. From the airport, bus 01X or 01N runs to the city centre, the railway station and the KTEL Makedonia bus station, and 02X and 03X to metro stations; 01X and 02X cost €2, with tickets from the booth and machines at the terminal.

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: Viber.

Thessaloniki has a single metro line with 13 stations that runs from the New Railway Station across the city centre and the southern and eastern suburbs to Nea Elvetia. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 112 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
