On arrival
- Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: Viber.
- Paying — Cards are widely taken in shops, hotels and for transport, but not in some restaurants; carry some euros.
- UPI, for visitors from India — For sending money to India, not for paying in shops; bring a card that works abroad.
- Getting around Athens — Tap a contactless Visa or Mastercard, or a phone, on the metro (in and out), trams and buses; daily charges stop at the €4.10 day-ticket price. Airport trips cost extra.
- Getting around Crete — For KTEL buses out of Heraklion, buy the ticket at the bus station, where cards are taken, or online; an online ticket must be shown printed, with ID. Heraklion's city buses cost €1.30 within 5 km of the centre if bought before boarding, for example in the urban bus app, or €2.30 on board; a 24-hour ticket is €6.
- Tipping — Not required; leave a euro or two, or round up, in restaurants. Taxi drivers do not expect a tip, though rounding up to the euro is common.
- Emergency — 112 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 7 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.

Every verdict here is the destination's own: ten years of climate readings, the public holidays that crowd it, and what the flight costs. Nothing is said about Greece as a whole that was not first measured at each place in it.
