Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the centre, 16 km from the airport (SKP): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from July to September; quietest from November to January.

Then and now

Skopje's August days now average 32.7°C, 3.2°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 5 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — The currency is the denar (MKD). Everyday life runs largely on cash: cards are taken in some larger places, and there are ATMs in the towns; use ones in public places or inside a bank, and cover the keypad. Change money only at banks or official exchange offices, never with street dealers, and change leftover denars before you leave, as British banks, for one, do not take them.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not seen as essential, but always welcomed.

Getting around Skopje

Skopje's airport is 23 km from the city. The airport shuttle bus runs to a timetable set by the flights, stopping at the Holiday Inn, the Central Bus Station and Hotel Continental, for 199 denars one way: buy the ticket at the airport counter (8am to 8pm), on the bus at night, at the Central Bus Station or online, in cash (denars only) or by card. Airport Taxi, the only firm allowed to carry passengers from the airport, waits at the exit round the clock in white cars numbered 1 to 65, at fixed prices: 1,500 denars (€25) to Skopje, by the price list of 9 February 2024.

  • Apps — Rides: Wizi. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Use only officially marked taxis, and agree the fare before you set off or insist that the driver uses the meter, as you may be overcharged.

Skopje Bus has a vast, frequent and efficient bus network. More on Wikivoyage
