Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the Old Port, 20 km from the airport (MRS): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from June to September; quietest from November to February.

Then and now

Getting there

How far Marseille is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and E plugs at 230 / 400 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Euro. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for France: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Visa, Mastercard and French CB cards work in almost all shops, restaurants and hotels, and contactless is widespread. Some places post a minimum spend for cards.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Only at a few places, through Lyra: Eiffel Tower tickets bought online and the Galeries Lafayette store on boulevard Haussmann in Paris. Bring a card for everything else.
  • Tipping — Not expected, as service is included by law; locals leave small change or a few euros for good service. Taxi tips are optional.

Getting around Marseille

Tap a contactless bank card or phone on the reader as you board a bus or tram and at the metro gates (€1.70, with free changes for an hour on the same card). Or buy a reloadable ticket from machines at metro and tram stations (€1.70 a trip, €6.70 for 24 hours), or a €2 single from the bus driver, with exact change; RTM sells no tickets online. Validate at every boarding, changes included. The A1 shuttle from the airport to Saint-Charles station takes 30 to 50 minutes: tap a bank card on board (€15).

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, G7, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp.

Marseille is served by a transit system, the Régie des Transports de Marseille (RTM) comprising 2 métro (subway) lines, 3 tram lines and 74 bus lines. More on Wikivoyage
