On arrival

  • Paying — Lithuania uses the euro. The vast majority of shops, restaurants and hotels take cards, contactless included, but carry some cash for markets and fairs and for remote places and rural homesteads. Card and ATM fraud occurs in tourist areas: use cash machines inside a bank or in a public place, and cover the keypad.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Appreciated, though less ingrained than in some countries: 5% is standard, and it may already be on the bill, or the card machine may invite you to add it.

Getting around Klaipėda

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, Etransport, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Book taxis through an app or by phoning a registered firm whose cars use a meter, make sure the meter is on, and ask for a printed receipt. At the airport, use only the official taxi rank in front of arrivals, where fares are capped.

What Klaipėda is like

Klaipėda is a city in Lithuania Minor, the narrow northwest coastal region of Lithuania. It's the country's third-largest city. The city has historic sights but isn't pretty-pretty like Vilnius Old Town, and draws mostly local tourism. More on Wikivoyage

Klaipėda Castle, Priešpilio g. Only a single bastion remains of this moated castle, built in 1253 by the Livonian Order of Teutonic Knights; its wooden predecessor on the opposite river bank has long disappeared. More on Wikivoyage

Beaches – The west coast of the Curonian Spit is sandy throughout its length, backed by forest and sandhills. Smiltynė, the north tip just across the channel from downtown, is obviously the busiest. More on Wikivoyage
