Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the old town, 6 km from the airport (VNO): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July and August; quietest in February and March.

Then and now

Vilnius's March days now average 6.7°C, 3.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 8 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Lithuania uses the euro. The vast majority of shops, restaurants and hotels take cards, contactless included, but carry some cash for markets and fairs and for remote places and rural homesteads. Card and ATM fraud occurs in tourist areas: use cash machines inside a bank or in a public place, and cover the keypad.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Appreciated, though less ingrained than in some countries: 5% is standard, and it may already be on the bill, or the card machine may invite you to add it.

Getting around Vilnius

From the airport, buses 1 and 2 run to the railway station and express bus 3G and bus 88 through the city centre, and a train reaches the railway station in 7 minutes. On buses and trolleybuses, tap a contactless bank card on board for a 60-minute ticket (€1.25), or buy tickets in the Trafi app (€1 for 30 minutes, €7.50 for 24 hours, €13.50 for 72 hours; at least €5 an order) or on a JUDU card (€1.50 at kiosks and larger shops). An activated ticket covers changes and any number of rides until it runs out.

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, Etransport, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Book taxis through an app or by phoning a registered firm whose cars use a meter, make sure the meter is on, and ask for a printed receipt. At the airport, use only the official taxi rank in front of arrivals, where fares are capped.

Walking is your only choice in Old Town. The old streets are pedestrianised, and even taxis avoid it. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 112 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

What Vilnius is like

Vilnius is the capital and largest city of Lithuania. It has a beautiful baroque Old Town, listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and excellent tourist facilities in all price ranges. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
Vilnius Pass is a tourist discount card which in 2023 costs €37 for 24 hours, €47 for 48 hours and €56 for 72 hours. This excludes public transport and is frankly poor value; you'll struggle to break even. More on Wikivoyage
