Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Chamonix town: ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.* Rainy days in May are as the weather station at Col du Grand St. Bernard (24 km away) counts them, where it and the model disagree on a wet month (WMO 06717, 2017–2026).

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in January, July, August, September and December; quietest in April, May, October and November.

What Chamonix is like

Chamonix (officially Chamonix-Mont-Blanc) is a resort in the Haute-Savoie region of France, bordering Italy, at the foot of Mont Blanc. It's regarded as the birthplace of mountaineering and as one of its capitals. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing

Worth doing
Be prepared! It's very cold and windy up there, even in summer. Fog, blizzards and thunderstorms may suddenly sweep in, at any time of year. More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
Most visitors fly into Geneva (GVA IATA) which has global connections, and is the usual route for budget flights. There are frequent buses from the airport to Chamonix (90 km) run by Chamexpress, Transalis and Alpybus. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
All high mountain hiking, climbing, and skiing, is potentially dangerous. Bad weather may turn an otherwise easy hike into an unpleasant slog or even a disaster, and sun glare can cause sunburn or snow-blindness. More on Wikivoyage
