Weekly note

Skiing, month by month

Where the snow lies deep enough to ski, measured over ten winters, while the lifts run. 9 places, each month tested the same way.

How a month is tested for skiing

A test on measured figures, the same at every place and from every city: the same month always gives the same answer. It is "good" or "fair", and a month that passes neither is simply not listed. It is separate from the month's own verdict, which also weighs holidays and crowds. The snow is ERA5-Land's depth, which can read high: a ski place's months were checked against snow gauges where there are any.

A cell is good, fair or blank, and shows the days in the month that passed the test.

Measured on each ski area's own slopes, halfway up its lifts, not in the town below, which can hold half the snow. Ski areas from OpenSkiMap.org, data from OpenStreetMap contributors and Skimap.org (ODbL); snow depth from Copernicus ERA5-Land by Open-Meteo.com (CC BY 4.0), read halfway up each area's lifts.
