Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Holetown, on the west coast, 20 km from the airport (BGI): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

No month stands out as busy; quietest in April and May.

Then and now

Barbados's September days now average 30.8°C, 2.5°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 12 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — US dollars are accepted island-wide, and most shops and restaurants take major cards; taxi drivers do not always take cards, so carry some cash.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.

Getting around Barbados

Blue Transport Board buses, yellow private minibuses and white ZR vans all charge the same flat fare, BDS$3.50 a trip. On Transport Board buses, put the exact fare in the farebox as you board: no change is given.

  • Apps — Rides: pickUP, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Both apps book the island's licensed taxis; street taxis have no meters, so agree the fare in Barbados dollars before you set off.

Drive on the left. The bus system is extensive, cheap and fast if you are headed somewhere on the main route, but a car or mini-moke is the only way to reach the out-of-the-way sights. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 211 · ambulance 511 · fire 311.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 7 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.

What Barbados is like

Barbados is an island in the Caribbean region, but which lies out in the Atlantic many miles east of the Caribbean Sea. Its nearest neighbours 100 miles (160 km) west are Saint Vincent and Saint Lucia, part of the arc of the Lesser Antilles that separate Atlantic and Caribbean. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
If you're a member of a heritage organisation at home, such as the National Trust or RHS in Britain, bring your membership card, you'll get a discount at many Barbados heritage sites. More on Wikivoyage
Worth doing
Diving is boat-based, as the main reefs and wrecks are too far out for comfortable shore-diving. (Though intrepid locals do so, and several snorkelling areas are easily reached from shore.) More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
All foreign visitors require a passport valid for the duration of their trip, and a return ticket. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
Barbados remains much safer than many other Caribbean islands, but in the 2020s crime is increasing. Be wary of secluded beaches and non-tourist residential districts away from main roads. More on Wikivoyage
Staying healthy
Your biggest risks are road safety, safety in the sea, and alcohol especially when combined with those. Climate: Beware of the sun. More on Wikivoyage
