Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at St John's, Antigua, 6 km from the airport (ANU): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in December and January; quietest in April and May.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — The currency is the Eastern Caribbean dollar, sold at most commercial banks (open 8am to 2pm Monday to Thursday and 8am to 4pm on Fridays), and US dollars are widely accepted. Card and ATM fraud happens at times: use ATMs in public places or inside a bank or business, and cover the keypad.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.

Getting around Antigua and Barbuda

Taxis wait just outside the terminal at V. C. Bird airport (ANU); their fares are fixed and posted at the airport and at taxi stands, and airport drivers wear a uniform and show a badge in the front window. Buses, run by private operators, link St John's East and West bus stations with the villages from about 5:30am to 6pm, though their schedules can be unpredictable. The Barbuda Express ferry leaves from the dock at the bottom of High Street in St John's six days a week and takes about 90 minutes.

  • Apps — Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Taxis have no meters: fares are set by zone, so agree the fare in EC dollars before you set off (US dollars are often taken too). Use only licensed, officially marked taxis, and check the driver's identity and licence plate before you get in.

Tourists mainly get around by car rental or tour operators. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 999 or 911 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
