Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the centre, on the river Aura, 7 km from the airport (TKU): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from June to August; quietest from December to April.

Getting there

How far Turku is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Euro. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Finland: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Finland uses the euro. Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, even in taxis and at market stalls, Visa and Mastercard most widely; carry a few coins or small notes for rural places. A place that takes no cash usually shows a sign saying Ei käteistä.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not expected, as service is always included in the bill; people may round up or leave a couple of euros for great service.

Getting around Turku

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FixuTaxi, Menevä, Taksi Helsinki, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp, Messenger. Taxi prices vary widely: each taxi shows its price list on its right-hand side, headed by the price of a 10 km, 15-minute example trip, so compare before you get in, and choose a fixed price when booking in an app. At Helsinki Airport, the official partner firms' taxis wait at the rank off the arrivals hall, about €40 to €45 to the centre; Uber, Bolt and pre-booked taxis pick up in the P2 parking hall.

The market square, Kauppatori (Swedish: Salutorget) is often considered the midpoint of the city, and most sights and restaurants, and most businesses in the centre, are within a kilometre from there. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 112 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

What Turku is like

Turku (Swedish: Åbo) is Finland's oldest city, and used to be the country's largest until the mid-19th century. Believed to have been founded in the early 13th century, it is the cradle of modern Finnish culture and has extensively influenced Finnish history. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
The vast majority of the city's sights are within a kilometre or two from Kauppatori. More on Wikivoyage
Worth doing
Turku is especially lively during the summer season, from the latter part of May to early September, as well as around the Advent and Christmas period in December. More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
Turku is well connected to the rest of the country by rail and road. From the west (Åland and Sweden), ferries are the main option, although there are flights for those in a hurry. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
Turku is generally a safe city. Turku faces some problems with street violence and organised crime, but common street sense should be enough in most cases. More on Wikivoyage
