Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the centre, 16 km from the airport (HEL): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from June to August; quietest in January, February, April and October.

Then and now

Helsinki's March days now average 2.4°C, 2.6°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 6 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Finland uses the euro. Cards and phone payments are accepted almost everywhere, even in taxis and at market stalls, Visa and Mastercard most widely; carry a few coins or small notes for rural places. A place that takes no cash usually shows a sign saying Ei käteistä.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not expected, as service is always included in the bill; people may round up or leave a couple of euros for great service.

Getting around Helsinki

I and P commuter trains run from the airport station, by lift or escalator from the terminal, to Helsinki Central Station in about 30 minutes, and HSL bus 600 runs round the clock from the bus station in front of arrivals to the centre in about 40. Both need an HSL ticket for zones ABC: show a contactless bank card to an HSL card reader for an adult single, or buy one in the HSL app, at the ticket machines by the platforms or at the R-kioski in arrivals; cash is not taken. The same ticket covers trams, buses, the metro, commuter trains and the Suomenlinna ferry.

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FixuTaxi, Menevä, Taksi Helsinki, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp, Messenger. Taxi prices vary widely: each taxi shows its price list on its right-hand side, headed by the price of a 10 km, 15-minute example trip, so compare before you get in, and choose a fixed price when booking in an app. At Helsinki Airport, the official partner firms' taxis wait at the rank off the arrivals hall, about €40 to €45 to the centre; Uber, Bolt and pre-booked taxis pick up in the P2 parking hall.

All public transport within the Capital Region is coordinated by HSL. This means that all public transport, such as trains, trams, buses, ferries and the metro all use the same ticketing scheme. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 112 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
