Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Mariehamn: ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from June to August; quietest in February and March.

Then and now

Åland's June days now average 18.5°C, 4.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 8 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Åland uses the euro. Cash machines that take international cards are in central Mariehamn (Köpmansgatan and Torggatan), at the Maxinge shopping centre in Jomala and in Godby, but there are none in the archipelago municipalities.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.

Getting around Åland

Ferries from Stockholm, Kapellskär and Grisslehamn in Sweden, from Turku, Naantali and Helsinki in Finland, and from Tallinn arrive at Mariehamn, Långnäs or Eckerö. From Mariehamn's western harbour, hotels, restaurants and sights are within walking distance; Långnäs is about 30 km away, so take a taxi or pre-booked transport, and a bus to Mariehamn meets every ferry at Eckerö. Mariehamn Airport, about 3 km from the centre, has flights from Stockholm Arlanda, Helsinki and Turku. In Mariehamn, the five town bus lines have their main stop at the corner of Nygatan and Torggatan, opposite Åland Post, and country buses leave from the bus station by the library, with few in the evenings and at weekends; the archipelago ferries are free for foot passengers.

  • Apps — Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. There are plenty of taxis in Mariehamn: they wait at the airport at arrival times, the terminal has a free phone line for booking one, and the ferry terminals have free taxi phones.

Most ferries and buses are operated by Ålandstrafiken. The archipelago ferries serve the archipelago throughout Åland. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 112 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

What Åland is like

The Åland Islands in the Baltic Sea are known for their extensive maritime history, relatively warm and sunny weather compared to the rest of the region, and popular outdoor activities. Although the islands are part of Finland, they form a self-governing autonomous territory. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
Most sights outside Mariehamn have limited opening hours outside the summer season. Pommern and the Åland Maritime Museum, at the West Harbour of Mariehamn, are Åland's most visited attractions. More on Wikivoyage
Worth doing
Åland is well suited to outdoor activities such as hiking, cycling, swimming, and exploring its peaceful countryside. More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
Åland is part of the Schengen Area, but not of the EU VAT union, so some items require customs clearance. If coming from abroad, pets need their passport and documented rabies and tapeworm treatment. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
Crime is rare and Åland is generally a safe destination. Ticks are common and can carry borreliosis (Lyme disease) and tick-borne encephalitis (TBE). More on Wikivoyage
