Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the centre, 13 km from the airport (TIA): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from June to September; quietest in January, February, April and December.

Then and now

Tirana's June days now average 29.0°C, 3.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 6 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — The currency is the lek (ALL). Cards are taken in the major cities, but carry cash for small purchases and in rural areas. Card and ATM fraud occurs: use ATMs in public places or inside a bank, and cover the keypad.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not a custom and not expected, and it may even confuse staff; in a westernised restaurant in Tirana, you may round up the bill.

Getting around Tirana

Tirana's airport (TIA) is 17 km from the city. The airport bus, the only regular public line, leaves every hour on the hour, round the clock, from the bus park a minute's walk from the terminal exit to its stop behind the Opera and Ballet building in the centre, in 30 to 40 minutes, for 400 lek or €4.50, paid on board in cash (lek or euros) or by card. The official airport taxis are yellow, with the Auto Holiday Albania and airport logos on both sides, and wait in front of the terminal: about 2,200 lek to the centre, in 20 to 25 minutes. City buses cost 40 lek a ride (the city's figure in 2022).

  • Apps — Rides: Patoko, Speed Taxi, VrapOn. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Use only officially marked taxis, and agree the fare before you set off or insist that the driver uses the meter, as you may be overcharged.

There are no metros available in Tirana. Feet, buses and taxis are the only options to get around in the city if you do not have private transportation. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 112 · ambulance 127 · fire 128.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
