Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Montego Bay: ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July and August; quietest in October.

Then and now

Jamaica's September days now average 31.6°C, 1.0°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 7 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Hotels, attractions and most restaurants in tourist areas take US dollars, and the bigger ones take cards. Carry Jamaican dollars, from the ATMs (called ABMs), for route taxis, roadside food and rural shops.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — 10-15% in restaurants, unless a service charge is already on the bill, as it often is in tourist areas; route-taxi drivers do not expect a tip.

Getting around Jamaica

Knutsford Express coaches link Montego Bay airport with Kingston, Ocho Rios and Negril: pay online, or at the office in cash or by Visa, Mastercard or Discover. Licensed route taxis, marked TAXI with their route printed on the vehicle, can be hailed along the way; the Transport Authority sets their fares.

  • Apps — Rides: inDrive, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Ride apps work only in some areas, Kingston among them; elsewhere, have your hotel book a licensed taxi (red-and-white PP plates) and agree the fare first, as taxis have no meters.

Jamaica has about 250 route miles of railways, of which 77 are in service to Windalco to handle privately operated bauxite (aluminium ore) trains. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 119 · ambulance and fire 110.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
