Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Roseau, 29 km from the airport (DOM): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July, August and November; quietest in May.

Then and now

Dominica's September days now average 29.8°C, 1.9°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 12 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Many businesses take US dollars and euros alongside Eastern Caribbean dollars, and most hotels, restaurants, tour operators and car-hire firms take Visa, Mastercard and American Express.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.

Getting around Dominica

Minibuses run from Roseau to most of the island, at fares the government set in March 2023; destinations are not usually posted on the front, so ask where each town's bus stops. Douglas-Charles airport (DOM) is on the north-east side of the island, about an hour from Roseau.

  • Apps — Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp. Taxis have no meters but standard fares for most destinations: use a registered one, whose windscreen sticker reads Nature Island's Standard of Excellence with a number, and agree the fare before you set off; you can usually pay in US dollars.

As far as freedom of movement and exploration a car can be invaluable. Though small, the island's tightly turning mountain roads make for relatively long journeys and a hair-raising experience. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 999 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
