Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the cathedral, the centre, 15 km from the airport (CGN): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from July to October; quietest in January, February and April.

Then and now

Cologne's June days now average 24.1°C, 4.5°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 11 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

How far Cologne is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Euro. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Germany: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Cash is still common: small cafés, independent shops and market stalls may not take cards, and foreign credit cards are less widely accepted. Supermarkets and chains take cards, often contactless.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Round up or add up to 10% in restaurants by telling the server the total as you pay. Give taxi drivers 5 to 10%.

Getting around Cologne

Buy a ticket in the VRS app or from a machine; both are valid at once. A single within Cologne (price level 1b) costs €4.00 and lasts 90 minutes, and a 24hTicket is €9.60. Or check in and out in the VRS eezy.nrw app, which never charges more for a trip than a single ticket.

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp.

Cologne has an excellent public transport network consisting of trams, local trains and buses. Bicycles are also available for hire on the northern side of the Hauptbahnhof. More on Wikivoyage
