Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the old town: ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from July to September; quietest in January and February.

Then and now

Getting there

Fly into Frankfurt am Main (FRA), then drive. The flights under Where to book are to Frankfurt am Main.

The drive from each airport is the road's, from openrouteservice.org by HeiGIT: typical, not a schedule.

How far Heidelberg is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Euro. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Germany: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Cash is still common: small cafés, independent shops and market stalls may not take cards, and foreign credit cards are less widely accepted. Supermarkets and chains take cards, often contactless.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Round up or add up to 10% in restaurants by telling the server the total as you pay. Give taxi drivers 5 to 10%.

Getting around Heidelberg

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp.

The city runs a small but rather effective system of trams and buses. The two most important nodal points are the main station and Bismarckplatz. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 110 · ambulance and fire 112.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

What Heidelberg is like

Heidelberg is a jewel among German travel destinations. Heidelberg has retained its baroque charm of narrow streets, picturesque houses and of course the world-famous Schloss (castle ruins). It is home to the oldest university in Germany (est. 1386). More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
Altstadt and Hauptstraße. Hauptstraße is the main street, which leads from Bismarckplatz across the old town. Approximately 1.6 km in length, it is reputedly the longest pedestrian shopping street in Germany. More on Wikivoyage
Worth doing
The city has more than 12 cinemas, and 8 theatres, including Stadttheater (Theater und Orchester Heidelberg), Theaterstraße 10. Large theatre house, home also to the philharmonic orchestra. More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
Frankfurt Airport (FRA IATA) — The nearest intercontinental airport. Stuttgart — for European 'EU-domestic' flights. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
Heidelberg is an extremely safe city (even by German standards). However, people walking alone at night should take the usual precautions they would do anywhere else. More on Wikivoyage
