Tours and tickets in Svalbard

Each site opens on its own search: choose your dates there. A few open on their home page, where you type the place too. Links marked Ad pay us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you; most pay nothing, and what a site pays never decides whether it is listed or where. How we rank

Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Longyearbyen, 5 km from the airport (LYR): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July, November and December; quietest in April.

Then and now

Svalbard's December days now average -7.3°C, 6.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 10 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

How far Svalbard is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Norwegian krone. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Norway: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Visa and Mastercard are taken almost everywhere, usually by tapping, and you can go days without cash; Vipps, the local payment app, needs a Norwegian bank account. Staffed shops must still accept cash for sums up to 20,000 kroner.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not expected: in restaurants round up, and 10% is generous. Taxi drivers do not expect a tip.

Getting around Svalbard

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, Norgestaxi, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: Messenger.

Most of Svalbard is protected as national park or nature reserves. There is no infrastructure outside Longyearbyen. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 112 · ambulance 113 · fire 110.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

What Svalbard is like

Svalbard (Russian: Шпицберген, Shpitsbergen or Грумант, Grumant) is a group of islands located between the Arctic Ocean, Barents Sea, Greenland Sea, and the Norwegian Sea. The area is sometimes referred to as Spitsbergen, the main island with all the settlements. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
Svalbard's visitors come mostly to experience Arctic nature at its rawest and most powerful. More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
Getting in is relatively expensive and time-consuming, but less so than other destinations at nearly the same latitude, e.g., in Greenland and Canada. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
The biggest threat on Svalbard is polar bears (isbjørn), some 500 of which inhabit the main islands at any one time. More on Wikivoyage
Staying healthy
Tap water on Svalbard is drinkable, but surface water may contain tapeworm eggs from fox feces and should be boiled before consumption. More on Wikivoyage
