Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at St Peter Port: ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July and August; quietest in January, February, March and November.

Then and now

Guernsey's February days now average 9.7°C, 1.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 11 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

How far Guernsey is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Facts from Wikidata (CC0), the UK Foreign Office (Open Government Licence) and the World Bank, refreshed 2026-10-10. The advisory is written for British travellers; entry rules depend on your passport.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — The currency is sterling: Guernsey has its own notes and coins, worth the same as the UK's, and UK and Jersey money can be spent on the island too, but Channel Island money is not accepted in the UK. Major credit cards are widely accepted; some businesses take euros but give change in sterling. Cash machines are at the banks in St Peter Port, at the airport and at some supermarkets and garages.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Restaurants set their own rules: some add a service charge to every bill, usually 10% and sometimes 12.5%, some only for large tables, and others leave a tip to you, so check the bill first.

Getting around Guernsey

From the airport, routes 93, 94 and 95 run direct to the bus terminus in St Peter Port, and route 71 goes there by way of the Princess Elizabeth Hospital. Buses take contactless payment only, not cash; fares start at £1.70. The airport's information desk (09:00 to 18:00) sells 7-day passes and the Puffin pay-as-you-go card; there and at the Town Terminus shop in St Peter Port, a pay-as-you-go pass can be bought with cash, and both take more kinds of foreign card than the buses do. Ferries leave St Peter Port for Herm (about 20 minutes) and Sark (30 to 50 minutes).

  • Apps — Rides: 1st Call Taxis, Guernsey Taxi App. Maps: Google Maps. The Guernsey Taxi App, made by the States of Guernsey, is used by most of the island's licensed taxi operators and hails a taxi in real time. Taxi ranks are at the airport, right outside the terminal, in St Peter Port and at The Bridge in St Sampson, but booking ahead is strongly advised, above all early in the morning and in the evening, when demand is highest.

Buses ply most of the island roads, all converging on St Peter Port, for a flat fare of £1.60, just pay contactless on bus. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 999 or 112 (any emergency). Ambulances are not free: an emergency response costs a visitor £963, though UK and Jersey residents are covered by the reciprocal health agreement.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

What Guernsey is like

The Bailiwick of Guernsey (French: Guernesey, Guernesiais: Guernési, Sercquiais: Gyernëzi) is a group of islands in the English Channel, part of the Channel Islands. Guernsey is the main island, some 50 miles west of the Cotentin Peninsula in France. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
Castle Cornet, Castle Pier, St Peter Port GY1 6GN. Assistance dogs only. More on Wikivoyage
Worth doing
Beaches: over two dozen, those to the north and west being flat and sandy, those east rocky. The south has little coves beneath the cliffs, scenic (Renoir enjoyed painting them) but access is not as easy. More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
Entry regulations are the same as for Jersey, see Channel Islands#Get in. See Alderney, Sark and Herm for routes to those islands. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
The main hazards are natural, e.g. slippy rocks. Crime is uncommon but take usual care of your belongings and avoid the occasional idiot drunk. More on Wikivoyage
