Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Road Town, Tortola, 8 km from the airport (EIS): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in March; quietest in October.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — The British Virgin Islands use the US dollar. Most hotels, restaurants and shops take major credit cards, and ATMs are widely available.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.

Getting around British Virgin Islands

Terrance B. Lettsome airport (EIS) is on Beef Island, joined to Tortola by a bridge, and the Beef Island Taxi Association's taxis work from it. Many visitors fly to St Thomas instead and take a taxi to its ferry docks, about 10 minutes to Charlotte Amalie or 45 to Red Hook, for a ferry to Road Town or West End: ferries sail only in daylight, from about 7:30am, the last usually around 4:30 to 5pm, so plan a night in St Thomas if you land late. Since March 2026, government-approved buses marked 'Bus Service' run about every half hour from Road Town to East End and to West End and Carrot Bay, from early morning until 7 or 8pm.

  • Apps — Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Taxi fares are set by the Taxi and Livery Commission and depend on the distance and the number of passengers: agree the fare with the driver before you set off.

A great way to see the islands is by boat. sailing boats and motor boats can be rented or chartered with a crew from any major harbour. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 911 (any emergency). Virgin Islands Search and Rescue (VISAR), for emergencies at sea, is on 767, and the police can be called on 311 when it is not an emergency.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
