Things to do in Belfast

  • Titanic Belfast For a century this was the "T-word" in Belfast, even more than the Troubles…
  • Stormont Parliament Buildings These massive buildings, built in neo-Georgian style in 1926…
  • HMS Caroline Royal Navy light cruiser built in 1914 and engaged in the Battle of Jutland.
  • Samson and Goliath These are two massive gantry cranes near the entrance to the Titanic Quarter.
  • SS Nomadic Titanic and her sister-ship Olympic were too big to dock in Cherbourg…
  • Milltown Cemetery Best known for its republican burials, but its range is far broader.
  • Belfast Castle Baronial pile built on Cave Hill for the Shaftesbury family in the 1860s.

Tours and tickets in Belfast

Each site opens on its own search: choose your dates there. A few open on their home page, where you type the place too. Links marked Ad pay us a commission if you book, at no extra cost to you; most pay nothing, and what a site pays never decides whether it is listed or where. How we rank

Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at City Hall, the centre, 20 km from the airport (BFS): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

Busiest in August.

Getting there

How far Belfast is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type G plugs at 230 V. Drives on the left. The currency is the Pound sterling. Everything for United Kingdom: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Contactless cards and phones work almost everywhere, and some places no longer take cash. Small shops and pubs may set a card minimum of about £5.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — 10 to 15% in restaurants for good service, unless a service charge is already on the bill. Rounding up a taxi fare is usual but not expected.

Getting around Belfast

On Metro buses, tap a contactless bank card or phone once on the driver's reader: the day's first journey costs £2.30, the second £1.70 and the rest are free, so a day caps at £4.00. For the Glider, buy a ticket from the machine at the stop before boarding. Airport Express 300 runs between Belfast International Airport and Grand Central Station, and the 600 between Belfast City Airport and the city centre; tickets are sold online and at machines at Grand Central and at each airport's bus stop.

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp.

Walk to all the central sights. The centre is within a mile or two of the Botanic Gardens, Queen's University and Titanic. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 999 or 112 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 7 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.

What Belfast is like

Belfast (Irish: Béal Feirste) is the capital and largest city of Northern Ireland. Most of it historically lay in County Antrim west of the River Lagan, with about a third on the east bank in County Down, but it's always been governed as a separate metropolis, with a population in 2024 of about 671,000. Staying safe
Belfast is for the most part a safe, welcoming city. Though there's trouble beneath the surface, it's locals settling old scores, and tourists aren't involved. More on Wikivoyage
