Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Sigiriya village (or Dambulla): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in February and March; quietest from April to June.

Then and now

Sigiriya's January days now average 27.7°C, 1.1°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 2 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

Fly into Colombo (CMB), then drive. The flights under Where to book are to Colombo.

The drive from each airport is the road's, from openrouteservice.org by HeiGIT: typical, not a schedule.

How far Sigiriya is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type D and G plugs at 230 V. Drives on the left. The currency is the Sri lankan rupee. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Sri Lanka: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Most hotels, restaurants and shopping centres take cards, but cash still dominates; carry rupees for buses and small shops. Many shops show LANKAQR codes, which LankaPay says tourists can pay with their own phone apps.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Works at participating shops, hotels and restaurants showing a LankaQR code: scan it with your UPI app.
  • Tipping — Not expected but welcome; about 10% for good service, unless the bill already has a service charge.

Getting around Sigiriya

  • Apps — Rides: PickMe, Uber. Maps: Google Maps. Messages: WhatsApp. PickMe covers more of the island than Uber, and both book tuk-tuks as well as cars.

You can organise a tuk tuk to take you around, but it's more exciting just walking around and exploring all the other sights and viewpoints here. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 118 or 119 · ambulance 1990 · fire 110. The tourist police are on 011 2421052.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 3 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.
