Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Nouméa, 38 km from the airport (NOU): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July.

Then and now

New Caledonia's December days now average 28.5°C, 1.6°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 12 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — The currency is the CFP franc (XPF), pegged to the euro and hard to find outside New Caledonia, so take cash from the BNC or BCI ATMs at the airport on arrival. Visa and Mastercard are widely accepted; carry cash outside Greater Nouméa and on the islands, and note that American Express cards cannot withdraw cash.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Tipping is not customary.

Getting around New Caledonia

La Tontouta airport is 52 km north of Nouméa, about 45 minutes from the main hotels: book a shuttle (Arc en Ciel, Go Shuttle, Les Mouettes and others) or a taxi. In Greater Nouméa, Tanéo buses cost 500 XPF a trip or 1,500 XPF for a day pass, sold at Tanéo's agencies in the city centre; line 3 runs to Anse-Vata.

  • Apps — Rides: Zygo. Maps: Google Maps. Taxis are booked by phone, round the clock, on +687 28 35 12; Zygo, an app the tourism board names as an alternative to taxis, works only in Nouméa for now.

Forget about Google Maps, it is grossly incomplete in New Caledonia and often wrong. OpenStreetMap is a much better option. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 17 · ambulance 15 · fire 18.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 8 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.
