Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the centre, 17 km from the airport (MVD): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from November to February; quietest in September and October.

Then and now

Montevideo's November days now average 22.4°C, 1.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 8 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — The currency is the Uruguayan peso (UYU), and some businesses also take US dollars and Argentine pesos. Cards cannot always be used outside the main towns, and ATMs do not always take foreign debit cards: use machines in banks or shopping centres rather than on the street. Banks open from 1pm to 5pm.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not compulsory, but leaving about 10% is welcome and usual.

Getting around Montevideo

Carrasco International Airport (MVD) is 20 to 30 minutes from central Montevideo. COPSA, COT and CUTCSA buses run from the airport, and the airport's official taxis and shared shuttles, small buses that take you to where you are staying, can be booked by phone, WhatsApp or email. On city buses, pay 64 pesos in cash for a ride, or 52 pesos with an STM card (fares from 5 January 2026), which is free the first time at STM customer offices on showing your passport and lets you change lines within one or two hours.

  • Apps — Rides: Cabify, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp. Taxis are white and yellow and charge by the meter, in units called fichas, with higher fares from 10pm to 6am and on Sundays and holidays; only some take cards. Find one at a rank at shopping centres or the bus terminal, or order one by phone or in an app.

Buses are the only form of mass public transit available in town, so it's likely you'll use them at some point. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 911 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 8 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.
