Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the Rathaus, the centre, 9 km from the airport (HAM): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July and August; quietest in January and February.

Then and now

Hamburg's June days now average 22.7°C, 3.8°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 10 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

How far Hamburg is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Euro. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Germany: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Cash is still common: small cafés, independent shops and market stalls may not take cards, and foreign credit cards are less widely accepted. Supermarkets and chains take cards, often contactless.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Round up or add up to 10% in restaurants by telling the server the total as you pay. Give taxi drivers 5 to 10%.

Getting around Hamburg

Buy a ticket before you board, in the hvv switch or hvv app or from a ticket machine; app tickets turn valid 90 seconds after purchase. A Hamburg AB single is €4.10 and a day ticket €8.20, and the airport (S1) is inside Hamburg AB. Buses in Hamburg take no cash and sell tickets on board only against an hvv Prepaid Card.

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp.

Hamburg's city centre is not particularly large, and getting around on foot is perfectly doable when visiting attractions in the centre. More on Wikivoyage
