Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Hallstatt village: ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest from July to September; quietest in January, February, March, April and November.

Then and now

Hallstatt's June days now average 23.7°C, 4.0°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 9 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

Fly into Salzburg (SZG), then drive. The flights under Where to book are to Salzburg.

The drive from each airport is the road's, from openrouteservice.org by HeiGIT: typical, not a schedule.

How far Hallstatt is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Euro. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Austria: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Debit and credit cards work in most shops in Vienna, even for small sums, but Austria is cash-minded and some shops and cafés still take cash only.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — About 5 to 10% in restaurants and cafés, added as you pay, in cash or on the card; check the bill first. Taxi drivers are usually tipped too, though it is not required.

Getting around Hallstatt

Without a car, take a train on the Attnang-Puchheim to Stainach-Irdning line to Hallstatt station, across the lake from the village: the Stefanie ferry meets every train and crosses to Hallstatt Markt all year round (€4 a crossing, cash only). Or take a bus from Bad Ischl railway station towards Hallstatt; lines 542 and 543 stop at Hallstatt Lahn. Drivers use the paid car parks P1, at the petrol station at the end of the village, and P2, by the Salzwelten visitor centre; the first 15 minutes are free.

  • Apps — Rides: Bolt, FreeNow, Uber. Maps: Google Maps, Apple Maps. Messages: WhatsApp.

The center of Hallstatt is for foot traffic and buses only. A walk from one side of town to the other would normally take only half an hour. More on Wikivoyage

  • Emergency — 112 (any emergency) · police 133 · ambulance 144 · fire 122.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.
