Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at Cemoro Lawang, on the crater rim, 28 km from the airport (MLG): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in July, August and December; quietest in January, February and October.

Then and now

No month in Mount Bromo is clearly warmer than in 1981–1990: the differences are inside the ordinary spread between one year and the next.

Getting there

Fly into Surabaya (SUB), then drive. The flights under Where to book are to Surabaya.

Malang (MLG) the drive is not measured yet

The drive from each airport is the road's, from openrouteservice.org by HeiGIT: typical, not a schedule.

How far Mount Bromo is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type C and F plugs at 127 / 230 V. Drives on the left. The currency is the Rupiah. No UK Foreign Office advice against travel. Everything for Indonesia: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Cards work in hotels, malls and larger restaurants; carry cash for warungs, markets and small shops. QRIS codes are common, and bank apps from some Asian countries can scan them.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not expected, though often hoped for in Bali and other tourist areas; if you tip, hand it over quietly.

Getting around Mount Bromo

  • Apps — Rides: Bluebird, Gojek, Grab. Maps: Google Maps. Messages: WhatsApp. In parts of Bali, such as Canggu, Jimbaran and Uluwatu, local taxi drivers bar app pick-ups; walk a short way off before booking.

From the village of Cemoro Lawang, you can easily hike up Mount Bromo and Mount Penanjakan and the best time to do this is pre-dawn. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 110 · ambulance 118 or 119 · fire 113. From a mobile, 112 is the general emergency number.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 3 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.

What Mount Bromo is like

Bromo-Tengger-Semeru National Park (Taman Nasional Bromo Tengger Semeru) is a national park in East Java. It is home to five volcanoes and a sand sea in the caldera of the ancient Tengger volcano, has a rugged, other-worldly landscape, and offers lots of hiking opportunities. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
The much photographed view of steaming Mount Bromo surrounded by the Sea of Sand, its rather serene neighbour Mount Batok and mighty Mount Semeru as the southern backdrop, is one of the great images of Indonesia. More on Wikivoyage
Worth doing
When timing any activities in the area, bear in mind that sunset is soon after 17:00 and sunrise is correspondingly early at around 05:30. More on Wikivoyage
Getting in
Mount Bromo is perhaps the most accessible of Java's active volcanoes and for that reason it gets a lot of domestic tourists, often in package groups. More on Wikivoyage
Staying safe
Bromo is an active volcano, and Semeru is a very active volcano. Mount Semeru started erupting on December 2021 and, exactly a year later, erupted again on December 2022, with casualties and damage to villages. More on Wikivoyage
Staying healthy
Temperatures on Mount Bromo are refreshingly cool during the day (although sunburn is still a real danger), but very cold at night, as temperatures can drop to zero in the summer and are rarely much above 5°C in winter. More on Wikivoyage
