Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at the centre (Rudaki Avenue): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in June and August; quietest in January.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Tajikistan runs mainly on cash, in somoni (TJS): very few businesses take cards, mostly larger hotels, restaurants and cafés in the cities. There are ATMs in Dushanbe and larger towns but none in rural areas; most take only Visa, and some refuse foreign cards or run out of money, so take out enough in Dushanbe before travelling on, using ATMs inside banks where you can. Change money only at authorised exchange offices, banks or major hotels; US dollars are the easiest to change, but exchange booths may refuse damaged or marked notes and dollars printed before 2013.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — Not customary but appreciated; higher-end restaurants and hotels may already add a service charge, and elsewhere rounding up the bill or leaving a small tip is appreciated.

Getting around Dushanbe

Within the city a taxi is best, and a ride should usually cost no more than 30 somoni; few streets are known by name beyond Rudaki and Somoni avenues, so give the driver a landmark. Trolleybus 1 runs along Rudaki Avenue for 2.5 somoni in cash (bring coins), though public transport is unreliable, and Canada advises against the shared taxis called marshrutkas. Carry your passport or a notarised copy at all times. Without an e-visa, a stay of more than 10 days must be registered with the OVIR office at 5 Mirzo Tursunzoda Street, as hotels can no longer do it for you; travellers who did not register have been detained at Dushanbe airport.

  • Apps — Rides: Jura, Rakhsh Taxi. Maps: Google Maps, Yandex Maps. Pre-book your taxi, in an app or at your hotel's reception, rather than taking an unmarked car or one already carrying a passenger; drivers do not always use meters, so agree the fare first, and many taxis have no rear seatbelts, so you can ask for one that has them.

Riding the bus in Dushanbe is an adventure in and of itself. For starters, there are no published or otherwise available bus route maps or timetables. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — police 102 or 02 · ambulance 103 or 03 · fire 101 or 01. From a mobile phone dial 102, 103 or 101 rather than 02, 03 or 01; the emergency services do not speak English.
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

What Dushanbe is like

Dushanbe, the capital of Tajikistan, is a beautiful city of stark contrasts between the old and the new. Old Soviet-era buildings stand adjacent to new massive state buildings and monuments, and there always seems to be a tension between the demolition of the old and the construction of the new.
