Rain days are the days with at least 1 mm of rain, as a weather station counts them.

Weather read at downtown, 26 km from the airport (AMM): ten years of ERA5 and ERA5-Land reanalysis, through Open-Meteo's open data.

A busy month is a crowded one, not a bad one — usually it is crowded because the weather is good. It is flagged rather than scored down, and crowds alone never make a month “avoid”: that is reserved for weather worth skipping.

How busy it gets

Busiest in October and November; quietest in January and June.

Then and now

Amman's October days now average 26.6°C, 1.3°C warmer than in 1981–1990. 3 of 12 months are clearly warmer.

Getting there

How far Amman is, and what it costs, depends on where you set off from — the months above do not.

Before you go

Type B and C and F and G plugs at 230 V. Drives on the right. The currency is the Jordanian dinar. UK Foreign Office: avoid all travel to parts. Everything for Jordan: cost of living, languages, emergency numbers and health.

Being there

On arrival

  • Paying — Hotels, restaurants and larger shops take Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Diners Club cards, but smaller shops and the souks want cash in dinars; ATMs are common in Amman and the bigger towns but scarce elsewhere. Prices are often written in fils: 4,750 is 4 dinars 750 fils.
  • UPI, for visitors from India — Not accepted for paying here; bring a card that works abroad.
  • Tipping — About 10% for waiters, unless a service charge is already on the bill; taxi drivers do not expect a tip, but round the fare up.

Getting around Amman

  • Apps — Rides: Careem, Jeeny, Petra Ride, Uber. Maps: Google Maps. Messages: WhatsApp. Uber serves only Amman; for a taxi elsewhere, ask your hotel to call a licensed one (it has a government sticker on the windscreen) and agree the fare first, as meters are not always used.

Some areas of Amman are not easily navigated on foot. Be aware when walking through areas of Amman that are not familiar to you because the walkable route might be inconvenient. More on Wikivoyage

Help

  • Emergency — 911 (any emergency).
TravelCharika is not an emergency service: we cannot call for help or send anyone. Numbers can change; if one fails, ask someone local or your hotel.

Put together by hand from the sources listed, checked 7 October 2026. Apps, cards and rules change, so check before you rely on one.

What Amman is like

Amman (Arabic: عمان ʻammān) is the capital and largest city of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan with a population of about 4 million as of 2020. Amman forms a great base for exploring the country and does, despite popular belief, hold a few items of interest to the traveler. More on Wikivoyage

Worth seeing
Although the capital of a diverse kingdom, Amman is not what one would call "packed" with things to see, making it a great gateway to explorations further afield. More on Wikivoyage
Worth doing
See the sunset from the view point near the Citadel. But pay also your attention to the time of the muezzin call. More on Wikivoyage
